ESMES

The Energy Smart Mediterranean Schools Network project (ESMES), is part of the ENI CBC Med Programme and focuses on the optimization of energy consumption in public schools through innovative, monitoring-based renewable energy and energy efficiency (REEE) pilot actions.

Objectives

  • Increase civil society awareness and improve energy habits through the cross-border engagement of students in a sustainable use of energy resources in Jordan, Tunisia, Lebanon, Italy and Spain.
  • Reduce the energy consumption in public schools' buildings in the five (5) mentioned countries, through the introduction of cost-effective REEE solutions tailored to buildings energy loads, type and use, and climatic zone.
  • Enhance capacities of national, regional and local institutions to plan and realize improved energy rehabilitations for higher energy sustainability of public buildings through cross-border cooperation.

Expected Achievements

  • Set-up strategies to support efficient and cost-effective energy mix in public schools
  • Set-up national energy efficiency hubs among relevant stakeholders to enhance national cooperation on REEE.
  • Prepare REEE rehabilitation plans for public schools based on monitoring data and energy audits.
  • Implement pilot REEE solutions in public schools with energy performance certifications
  • Run schools’ contests and increase awareness and better energy habits in schools through trainings and awareness activities.

Ongoing Activities

Activity 1: Installation of Smart Energy Meters in Public Schools

As ESMES will focus on the optimization of energy consumption in public schools through innovative, monitoring based renewable energy and energy efficiency (REEE) pilot actions, Activity 1 is related to the installation of Energy Monitoring Equipment which includes all related hardware, infrastructure upgrade and software.

Electrical data will be collected from up to seven (7) schools in Lebanon and thirty-four (34) schools in total in the five (5) partner countries. The data will be automatically collected, stored, processed and published on an online platform that is being developed by GJU in Jordan.
