On the Mediterranean Day: What about Lebanon’s role in the hydrogen market?

November 28, 2021 marks the first celebration of “Mediterranean Day” launched by the “Union for the Mediterranean”. This occasion and the accompanying great dynamism carry many meanings and strategic messages about the role of the Mediterranean region in the coming years, especially for the European Union, the most important player in that region economically and culturally.

There is no meeting, conference, or meeting held around the world today without addressing the huge expected role of hydrogen in the green global energy transition. Perhaps this “surge” about the importance of hydrogen, specifically” in the Mediterranean region, stems from the vexing questions that scientists around the world are asking today: How can electricity systems reach 100% renewable energy in light of the inability of those systems to maintain its grid stability, even with renewable energy rates that sometimes do not exceed 30%?

As the world rushes behind the development of hydrogen technologies in all its colors – green produced from renewable energy sources, blue produced from natural gas sources or others with carbon capture and storage systems, gray and yellow, and others – the question remains about Lebanon’s role in this race to protect it from the evil of deep slumber.

يصادف يوم 28 تشرين الثاني2021 الاحتفالية الاولى بـ"يوم #البحر المتوسط" والتي اطلقها "الاتحاد من اجل المتوسط". وتحمل هذه المناسبة والدينامية الكبيرة المرافقة لها الكثير من المعاني والرسائل الاستراتيجية عن دور منطقة البحر المتوسط في السنوات المقبلة، ولا سيما بالنسبة الى الاتحاد الاوروبي، اللاعب الاهم في تلك المنطقة اقتصاديا" وثقافيا". ولا شك ان الكثير من التساؤلات والهواجس تحيط بحركة الاتحاد الاوروبي في منطقة المتوسط بالتحديد، انما يبرز قطاع الطاقة كأهم المواضيع المشتركة التي يمكن ان تشكل عامل تلاق، او في حال فشل، عامل تضارب.

ولا يخلو لقاء او مؤتمر او اجتماع يعقد حول العالم اليوم من دون التطرق للدور الهائل المنتظر من الهيدروجين Hydrogen في التحول الطاقوي العالمي الاخضر Green Global Energy Transition. ولعل هذه "الفورة" حول اهمية الهيدروجين، وتحديدا" في منطقة البحر المتوسط، تنبعث من الاسئلة المحيرة التي يطرحها العلماء حول العالم اليوم: كيف يمكن لنظم الكهرباء Electricity Systems ان تصل الى نسبة 100% طاقة متجددة في ظل عدم قدرة النظم تلك ان تحافظ على توازنها grid stabilityحتى مع معدلات طاقة متجددة لا تتعدى احيانا" 30%؟
